Purpose of the Job
The Locomotive Driver is responsible for manoeuvring trains from the exchange yard to loading and unloading points across various business units, ensuring safe and efficient rail operations.
Key Accountabilities
1. Training
- Attend site orientation and training as scheduled.
- Complete theoretical training at the training academy.
- Underline practical training, completing supervised shifts as required.
2. Train Operations
- Shunt and haul trains within Sasol Secunda boundaries.
- Use Transnet Freight Rail (TFR)/Sasol exchange yards.
- Drive and operate trains efficiently according to schedules and safety regulations.
- Ensure freight reaches destinations on time and in good condition.
3. Safety & Compliance
- Take responsibility for train safety and ensure continuous protection in line with safety standards and train working rules.
- Maintain a hazard‑free environment.
- Understand and comply with instructions, notices, regulations and operational communication requirements.
- Use radio communication effectively, especially under pressure.
4. Supervision & Coordination
- Provide clear operational instructions to the Rail Operator.
- Supervise all footplate activities according to the train schedule.
- Cooperate with the Rail Controller and other personnel when handling abnormal or unexpected conditions.
5. Load Management
- Move loads from a minimum of 40 wagons (≈ 2,000 t) to a maximum of 71 wagons (≈ 3,600 t).
- Transport all load types, including containers and hazardous materials.
6. Administration
- Perform moderate administrative duties requiring general knowledge of train services and operational processes.
Formal Education
Matric / Grade 12
Working Experience
Minimum 2 years of relevant experience.
Certification
Competency certificate for Locomotive Drivers.
