  3. Safety & Compliance

    • Monthly emergency simulations (derailment, hazardous material spills)

    • Track safety regulations (SANS 3000-1 compliance)

    • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) management

  4. Administration & Reporting

    • Digital operational journal maintenance (TRACER® system training)

    • Incident documentation (PRASA Form ROV-7)

    • Shift handover procedures

Rotational Placements

  • Months 1–4: Field Operations (Depot/Yard)

  • Months 5–8: Control Centre (Network signalling, scheduling)

  • Months 9–12: Specialisation Elective (Freight/Passenger/Maintenance)


Eligibility Requirements

Non-Negotiable Criteria:

  • Academic: Grade 12 Certificate with Mathematics OR Physical Science (Minimum Level 4)

  • Physical:

    • Minimum height: 1.6m (safety equipment compatibility)

    • Age 21+ (legal liability for operations)

    • Medical Fitness Certificate (including:

      • Colour vision test (Ishihara plates)

      • Audiometric assessment (≤25 dB hearing loss)

      • Drug/alcohol screening

  • Logistical: Willingness to relocate to assigned operational sites

Preferred Attributes:

  • Technical aptitude (mechanical/electrical interest)

  • Stress management in high-risk environments

  • Team collaboration skills
