Job Description
The internship is based on the Stellenbosch campus and will involve hands‑on experience in archival work under the supervision of experienced archivists. Key responsibilities include:
- Accessioning and Cataloguing: Sort, catalogue, and index physical and digital archival material following recognized archival standards.
- Metadata Creation: Build and update finding aids, metadata records, and indexes. Familiarity with controlled vocabularies is beneficial.
- Digitisation: Digitise selected documents, photographs, and other materials in accordance with best practices.
- Research & Reference Services: Assist researchers with reference queries both in‑person and online, and support research projects by retrieving and preparing materials.
- Outreach: Help set up exhibitions and guide visitor groups.
- Administrative Support: Maintain archival databases, manage document storage, and handle environmental monitoring, spatial planning, and relocation of collections.
- Team Work: Provide general administrative and ad‑hoc support as required.

Job Requirements
- Relevant tertiary qualification in Archival Studies, Library & Information Science, History, or a related field.
- Recently graduated; no prior full‑time work experience required.
- Basic knowledge of archival theory, principles, and methods.
- Competence in Microsoft Office applications.
- Good written and verbal communication skills in English and Afrikaans.
- Ability to plan, prioritise, meet deadlines, and work independently.
- Systematic, detail‑oriented approach.
- Proactive, flexible, and service‑oriented attitude.
- Should be able to work collaboratively with a team of experienced archivists on campus.
Preferred Experience (Recommendation)
- Knowledge of digitisation practices and standards.
- Experience with metadata creation and controlled vocabularies.
- Understanding of archival preservation and conservation principles.
- Knowledge of South African history and Stellenbosch University.
- Strong interpersonal skills and teamwork ability.
