About the Role: Seabird Nursery Internship

SANCCOB is offering a unique and rewarding 7-month paid internship for passionate individuals to join our Seabird Nursery programme in Cape Town. This is an incredible opportunity to contribute directly to the conservation of seabirds and gain hands-on experience in wildlife rehabilitation.

The internship programme will run from October 2025 through April 2026. This is a full-time position that requires a commitment to AM and PM shift work, which is essential for providing the highest standard of care to our vulnerable seabird chicks.

Key Responsibilities

As a Seabird Nursery Intern, you will become an integral part of our team. Your primary duties will include:

  • Assisting with the feeding and hydration of seabird chicks, including tube feeding techniques.
  • Maintaining impeccable hygiene standards within the nursery and all chick enclosures.
  • Closely monitoring the health, growth, and development of the chicks.
  • Accurately recording data and maintaining detailed records of chick progress.
  • Providing support to our veterinary staff and experienced seabird rehabilitators.
  • Participating in environmental enrichment activities and preparing chicks for their eventual release back into the wild.

Who We Are Looking For

This internship is ideal for students, recent graduates, or anyone with a profound interest in pursuing a career in wildlife conservation, zoology, marine biology, or veterinary science.

Requirements:

  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Must be a South African citizen.
  • Must reside in close proximity to SANCCOB in Cape Town due to the early start and late finish times associated with the shifts.
  • A genuine passion for seabirds, wildlife care, and conservation efforts.
  • Good physical fitness and a comfort level with working in a hands-on, fast-paced environment.
  • Willingness and availability to work early mornings, weekends, and public holidays as required.
  • Previous animal care experience is beneficial but is not essential—we provide comprehensive training!
