Purpose of the Role

The Warehouse Assistant / Driver ensures the smooth flow of goods in and out of the warehouse. The role involves receiving, storing, picking, packing, dispatching goods, and driving company vehicles safely. Accuracy, organization and safety are the key responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities

Receiving

  • Identify the origin of each shipment (branch, customer or supplier).
  • Classify the order type – Customer Return, Inter‑Company Transfer, Local Order or International Order.
  • Assign the correct destination (e.g. Richmond Park or another branch).
  • Place received goods in their proper storage locations.
  • Report any damaged, short‑supplied or over‑supplied items to the supervisor and procurement.
  • Complete discrepancy paperwork and hand it to the Receiving Supervisor at the end of the day.
  • Follow up on discrepancies and ensure resolution within 5 days.

Storage

  • Place goods securely in their storage locations.
  • Pack items to minimise damage during storage and transport.
  • Maintain a tidy, hazard‑free storage area.

Order Fulfilment

  • Remove damaged stock from shelves and coordinate with stock control.
  • Identify destination and order type for outgoing shipments.
  • Plan daily activities to meet delivery commitments.

Packaging

  • Package items to reduce damage and present them professionally.
  • Label all loose items according to SOP.

Dispatch

  • Coordinate deliveries to support company objectives.
  • Manage transportation quotes to stay within budget.
  • Scan all Proof of Delivery (POD) documents before close of business each day.
  • Verify delivery address and contact details; report errors to the salesperson.
  • Speak with the dispatch controller to ensure the right equipment is ready.

Documentation

  • Record quantity and quality of picked items.
  • Seek assistance for discrepancies and get supervisor sign‑off.
  • Store all documents as per SOP.
  • Ensure each document has two signatures – one from the hand‑over and one from the receiver.

Health & Safety

  • Implement and enforce health and safety policies for warehouse and transport.
  • Conduct regular safety audits and inspections.
  • Arrange training for warehouse and driving staff on safety protocols (including forklift/reach truck licence, first aid, etc.).
  • Perform pre‑trip and post‑trip vehicle inspections.
  • Operate company vehicles in compliance with traffic laws.

Computer Literacy / Systems

Intermediate proficiency in Windows and MS Office.

Requirements

Education & Experience

  • Minimum Matric/NQF 4 qualification.
  • Minimum 2 years warehouse experience.
  • Minimum 2 years delivery experience.
  • Minimum 2 years fleet and contract management experience.
  • Valid Driver’s Licence – Code 10.
  • Valid forklift licence.
