ABSA Group, a bank with over a century of experience, is looking for a Payment Officer to join our Commercial Operations team in Johannesburg. The role supports the Commercial and Investment Banking (CIB) group, Retail Banking (RBB), and Markets divisions. You will help the bank become the leading customer‑centric institution in the region, driving growth through acquisition, cross‑selling, and digitalisation.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform all customer payment instructions, including foreign and local cheque clearing, dormancy claims, reconciling payments and suspense accounts.
• Manage manual standing orders and other non‑core payment activities.
• Address customer enquiries and complaints about payments.
• Prepare and mail payment advice, dormant letters, and other documents.
• Capture and log updates for UT teller account openings and maintenance.
• Assist the Trade Finance team with product applications, ensuring adherence to ICC, UCP, URC, URDG, ISP 98 and NAPA guidelines.
• Support online payment processing and investigate failed transactions.
• Achieve individual and team performance and service level targets.
• Maintain clean desk policy and comply with all operational, compliance, and risk management procedures.
• Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives and empower team culture.
• Report operational risks and support operational risk management within the department.

Performance Areas

• Operational & Service Excellence: 75% of role focus.
• Operational Rigor: 15% – maintain audit‑ready processes and remediate findings.
• Risk & Control: 10% – ensure regulatory compliance and manage risk events.

Education & Qualifications

Required: Further Education and Training Certificate (FETC) in Business, Commerce or Management Studies. Experience or training in payment processing and banking operations is strongly preferred.
