A leading pharmaceutical organisation is seeking an experienced professional for the position of Head of Public Affairs, based in Johannesburg.

Objective of Role

The successful candidate will manage, lead, and develop public healthcare initiatives. This position reports directly to the Regional CEO and is responsible for overseeing a public healthcare budget exceeding R1 billion.

Key Responsibilities

The role encompasses a wide range of strategic, financial, and operational responsibilities, including:

  • Determining strategy within the company framework to drive growth and development.
  • Compiling and implementing Annual Business Plans, ensuring alignment and achievement of goals.
  • Ensuring optimal operational and strategic alignment with manufacturing sites.
  • Achieving sales growth, gross margin, and operating income targets.
  • Controlling expenses, forecasting, and maintaining stock level policies.
  • Compiling market data and product target costs for future planning.
  • Striking a balance between turnover, margin, and production volumes.
  • Developing and executing tender strategies and pricing.
  • Researching and analyzing market/product needs and developing information-sharing programs.
  • Enhancing the company’s image and reputation both externally and internally.
  • Initiating and leading corporate social development programs and healthcare initiatives.
  • Building and maintaining strategic alliances with professional bodies, political contacts, and competitors.
  • Planning and managing strategic projects, including budgeting and approval processes.
  • Implementing performance management systems, people development programs, and succession planning.
  • Addressing industrial relations issues, resolving conflicts, and managing disciplinary actions.
  • Identifying training needs and fostering a culture of continuous learning and growth.

Education Requirements

Candidates should possess:

  • A degree in Pharmacy or a related commercial field.
  • A financial degree or diploma (preferred).

Knowledge and Experience

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Experience in finance and legal aspects of public affairs.
  • International exposure and regulatory knowledge.
  • Strong networking skills at government levels, including interactions with the Tender Board, State Treasury, Medical Control Board, Department of Health, and Trade and Industries.
  • Familiarity with local and international tender processes.
