We are looking for an experienced and reliable Forklift Driver to join our Logistics Support Services team in Isando. This position offers a guaranteed 90 hours per month and focuses on safe and efficient warehouse operations.
The main duties include offloading inbound vehicles safely and on time, sorting and handling CHEP pallets, loading activities, and other logistics tasks. You will help ensure smooth operations while following food safety standards and meeting business targets.
Reporting Structure
This role reports directly to the Transport Manager.
Key Responsibilities
Offloading Vehicles When Required
- Use a forklift to unload goods from inbound vehicles.
- Stack stock neatly in the warehouse.
- Inspect vehicles and stock for any contamination before offloading, in line with food safety rules.
- Meet the turnaround time (TAT) targets for vehicles as set by the business.
- Handle stock and pallets carefully to avoid any damage.
Sorting, Stacking, and Loading of Pallets
- Unload empty pallets from vehicles.
- Inspect and sort pallets, separating good ones from broken ones based on CHEP standards.
- Count empty pallets daily and report the numbers to the Receiving Supervisor.
- Keep the pallet area clean and organized at all times.
- Stack and store pallets properly, following maximum height guidelines.
- Wrap broken pallet pieces neatly for safe loading.
- Load pallets back onto vehicles for CHEP or factories.
Loading Vehicles When Required
- Inspect vehicles for contamination before loading, per food safety requirements.
- Help Despatch Loaders load stock onto vehicles as directed by the supervisor.
- Stick to the business’s vehicle TAT times.
- Load heavier products at the bottom and lighter ones on top.
- Ensure no damaged pallets or stock are loaded.
- De-stack stock if needed to fit it properly into vehicles.
- Load stock stably with even weight distribution.
Operating Forklift Safely and Conducting Checks
- Check the forklift daily using a checklist: battery, water, oil, hydraulic oil, lights, and more.
- Test the forks for up and down movement, tilting forward and backward.
- Inspect tires and brakes.
- Report any issues to the supervisor right away.
- Follow warehouse speed limits and stay alert while driving.
- Handle products with care to prevent damage to goods or equipment.
- Drive carefully to avoid hitting equipment, property, or fixtures.
- Report any forklift damage or accidents to the supervisor immediately.
- Place wheel chocks under truck wheels before loading or offloading.
- Operate the material handling equipment (MHE) correctly to minimize issues on FMX, such as avoiding harsh braking, too much idling, or improper parking.
Ad Hoc Functions
- Clean the forklift thoroughly using the required detergents.
- Arrange regular maintenance by external contractors.
- Move any damaged products caused by the forklift to the repacking area.
- Clean up any spills immediately and dispose of waste in the proper bins.
- Assist with monthly stock counts and other tasks as assigned by management.
- Be willing to work extra shifts when needed, due to the fast-paced receiving operations.
Qualifications and Experience
- Grade 12 (Matric) or an equivalent qualification.
- At least 1 year of experience operating a forklift.
- A valid forklift license and current medical clearance.
Required Knowledge
- Understanding of CHEP pallet standards and how to handle them properly.
