Job Description
Dis-Chem Pharmacies’ Ferngate store is looking for a Dispensary Support to join our team. The role is to support learners completing the learner basic pharmacist assistant course, which covers key principles in the pharmacy environment, dispensing, and quality on‑the‑job learning. Employees will initially be hired on a fixed‑term basis until they are registered with the Pharmacy Council (SAPC) as learner basic assistants. Once certified, permanent employment will be offered.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist with the sale of Schedule 1 medicines or scheduled substances under direct pharmacist supervision.
- Help compound, manipulate or prepare non‑sterile medicines or scheduled substances following approved formulas and SOPs.
- Assist in unpacking, merchandising, and cleaning stock and OTC shelves.
- Perform all duties assigned by the Dispensary Manager.
- Accurately interpret prescriptions, manage medication ordering, packing, labeling and checking.
- Ensure all medications are reviewed and signed by a pharmacist.
- Maintain stock control of Schedule 1–5 medicines, including expiry dates.
- Follow up with patients on prescription tracking reports and appointment schedules.
- Support call‑centre scripts and patient service telephone calls.
- Provide health information to customers.
- Assist with scheme authorisation for chronic, HIV/AIDS and oncology medications.
- Report stock shortages or errors to the Dispensary Manager.
- Receive new stock in accordance with company SOPs.
Essential Qualifications
- Grade 12 – Matric or Senior Certificate with:
- Pure Mathematics 50%
- Life Science or Physical Science and overall average of 50%
- Successful completion of the proficiency test for registration with SAPC as a learner basic assistant.

Advantageous
- Experience in retail FMCG or front‑shop roles at Dis-Chem.
- Knowledge of drug and family planning products, and complementary medicine.
- Familiarity with Unisolv, SAP and e‑Scripting systems.
Special Conditions of Employment
- Successful pass of the proficiency test for pharmacy council registration.
- South African citizenship.
- Clear MIE, criminal record and credit check.
