About the Role
Dis-Chem Pharmacies is offering a valuable internship opportunity for a Pharmacy graduate at their Farramere store. This program is designed to provide comprehensive training in all major areas of the pharmaceutical environment, instilling a commitment to quality lifelong learning. The primary purpose is to equip you to take responsibility for patients’ medicine-related needs and provide excellent customer service.
Minimum Requirements
Essential Qualifications:
- Grade 12 / Matric certificate.
- A 4-year BPharm degree.
- Basic computer literacy in MS Office.
Advantageous Qualifications:
- Previous holiday work experience during your degree.
- Experience with Unisolve and E-Scripting systems.
Key Responsibilities & Duties
Under the direct personal supervision of a registered pharmacist, your duties will include, but are not limited to:
- Providing or performing services within the scope of a post-basic pharmacist’s assistant.
- The sale of Schedule 1 and Schedule 2 medicines or scheduled substances.
- Assisting with the compounding, manipulation, or preparation of non-sterile or sterile medicines according to approved formulas and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
- Assisting with the manufacturing of medicines according to approved formulas and SOPs.
- The re-packaging of medicines.
- The distribution and control of stock for Schedule 1 to Schedule 6 medicines.
- Ordering medicines and scheduled substances up to Schedule 6 as instructed by an authorised person.
- Reading and preparing prescriptions, selecting and compounding medicine, and labelling and supplying it in appropriate containers following a pharmacist’s evaluation.
- Providing patients with clear instructions on the correct use of their medicine.
- Providing health promotion information to individuals.
- For educational purposes, performing services within the full scope of a pharmacist’s practice under supervision.
- Accurately interpreting prescriptions and acting professionally and within the legal requirements of the South African Pharmacy Council.
- Capturing script details accurately and verifying patient information on the system.
- Ensuring accurate picking, packing, and labelling of medication, with awareness of common dosages and critical drug interactions.
- Staying updated on changes in medical aid procedures and claim dispensing requirements.
- Ensuring all entered prescriptions are checked and signed by a pharmacist.
- Advising and assisting patients at the dispensary, self-medication counter, and front-shop.
- Following up on script tracking reports as requested.
- Explaining all medical aid costs to patients, including differences between medical aid and cash prices.
- Processing necessary paperwork for accurate medical aid claim submissions.
- Correcting errors on scripts rejected by medical aids.
- Authorizing chronic, HIV/AIDS, and oncology medications.
- Maintaining accurate customer profiles on the system and acting on any profile messages.
- Reporting low stock levels and stock errors to the dispensary manager.
- Assisting with scheduled stock takes and exercising stock and asset control.
- Maintaining housekeeping standards in accordance with Dis-Chem policies.
- Adhering to all Dis-Chem Policies, Procedures, SOPs, and Health and Safety regulations.
- Complying with the Dis-Chem Uniform and personal appearance policy.

Special Conditions of Employment
- Must be willing and able to work retail hours.
- Comfort working in an environment with controlled room temperature, security limitations, limited space, and health and safety considerations for risk stock.
- Physically fit and able to stand for long periods.
- Possession of a valid driver’s license and own reliable transport.
- Must be registered with the South African Pharmacy Council OR have a valid work permit.
- Must provide clear credit and criminal records.
