Job Description
Dis-Chem Pharmacies’ Cradlestone store is looking for a dedicated individual to join our team as a Dispensary Support staff member. This is an excellent opportunity for those interested in beginning a career in the pharmaceutical field. You will be employed in a Fixed Term position while you complete the learner basic pharmacist assistant course. This comprehensive training program will provide you with fundamental knowledge of pharmaceutical principles and dispensing practices through quality on-the-job learning.
Upon successful registration with the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC) as a learner basic assistant and completion of your qualification as a basic pharmacist assistant, you will be considered for permanent employment with our organization.
Minimum Requirements
Essential:
- Grade 12 Matric or Senior Certificate
- Pure Mathematics with at least 50%
- Life Science and/or Physical Science with at least 50% average
Key Responsibilities
As a Dispensary Support staff member, you will be required to complete a proficiency test to qualify for registration with the Pharmacy Council (SAPC) as a learner basic assistant. Once registered, you may perform the following services under the direct personal supervision of a pharmacist:
- Sale of Schedule 1 medicines or scheduled substances
- Assist with compounding, manipulation, or preparation of non-sterile medicines according to approved formulas and Standard Operating Procedures
- Assist with unpacking, merchandising stock, and cleaning of dispensary and OTC shelves
- Accurately interpret prescriptions and maintain professional conduct within legal requirements
- Ensure accurate picking, packing, labeling, and checking of medications with awareness of common dosages and drug interactions
- Verify all medications are checked for accuracy and signed by a pharmacist
- Assist in stock control including managing cleanliness, shelf organization, and monitoring medicine expiry dates
- Follow up with patients regarding script tracking reports and appointment reminders
- Assist with call centre scripts and patient service telephone inquiries
- Provide health promotion information to individuals
- Assist with scheme authorization for chronic, HIV/AIDS, and oncology medications
- Report low stock levels and stock errors to the dispensary manager
- Receive dispensary stock in accordance with company Standard Operating Procedures
- Perform any other duties assigned by the Dispensary Manager

Advantageous:
- Retail FMCG experience
- Previous Dis-Chem front shop experience with good performance record
- Knowledge of drug and family planning and complementary medicine
- Proficiency in Unisolv, SAP, and E-Scripting systems
Special Conditions of Employment
- Successful completion of proficiency test for Pharmacy Council registration
- Must be a South African citizen
- Clear MIE, criminal, and credit checks
