Cummins Africa Middle East is seeking a dedicated and talented Apprentice – Engine Workshop Technician to join our dynamic service team. This is an excellent opportunity to build a career with a global leader in power generation and engine technology. The role is based in our Distribution Business Segment in Gamagara, Northern Cape, South Africa.

About the Role

As an Apprentice Engine Workshop Technician, you will play a crucial role in supporting our workshop operations. This learnership is designed to provide you with comprehensive, hands-on training in the repair and maintenance of mechanical and electrical products, specifically engines and power generators. You will work under the guidance of experienced technicians to develop the skills necessary for a successful career in this field.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with general workshop activities to ensure smooth and efficient daily operations.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment by cleaning, inspecting, and disassembling equipment.
  • Learn and apply Standard Repair Times (SRTs) and follow detailed procedures to perform basic repairs and maintenance tasks.
  • Assist with accurate documentation, including completing work order forms, timesheets, and other necessary paperwork.
  • Participate in and complete all required training programs aligned with both skill development and business needs.
  • Take care of tools and equipment, ensuring they are clean, functional, and stored properly.
  • Strictly adhere to all Health, Safety & Environmental (HSE) policies and procedures to maintain a safe workplace.
  • Proactively report any issues, incidents, or potential problems to your supervisor.

What You Will Need to Succeed

  • Proficiency in Product Repair and Maintenance: You will learn to efficiently repair and maintain mechanical/electrical products, disassemble and assemble engines or power generators, and inspect and replace parts to minimize costs for our customers.
  • Strong Mechanical Knowledge: A solid understanding of Cummins and industry standards is essential. You must be able to apply mechanical principles to diagnose and repair products safely and effectively.
  • Effective Diagnostics Application: You will be trained to translate customer complaints into actionable troubleshooting plans, use specialized diagnostic equipment and software to isolate issues, perform repairs, validate the work, and document the results.
  • Valid Driver’s License: A valid motor vehicle driver’s license is required for this role.

Qualifications and Experience

To be eligible for this apprenticeship, you must meet one of the following educational criteria:

Option 1:

  • A National Senior Certificate (NSC) / Matric Certificate (Grade 12).
  • Plus an N3 (Nated Certificate) in Engineering Studies with passes in:
    • Mathematics
    • Engineering Science
    • Engineering Drawing
    • Diesel Trade Theory / Motor Trade Theory / Mechanotechnology
  • Plus an N4 (Nated Certificate) in Engineering Studies with passes in:
    • Mathematics
    • Engineering Science
    • Mechanical Draughting
    • Mechanotechnics
  • Plus an N6 (Nated Certificate) in Mechanical Engineering with 4 subjects passed from the following:
    • Mathematics
    • Mechanotechnics
    • Mechanical Drawing and Design
    • Power Machines
    • Fluid Mechanics
    • Physics
    • Strength of Materials
    • Supervisory Management

Option 2:

  • A National Senior Certificate (NSC) / Matric Certificate (Grade 12).
  • Plus an NCV Level 4 qualification (from a TVET College) with passes in:
    • Engineering Process
    • Professional Engineering Practice
    • Applied Engineering Technology
    • Automotive Repair & Maintenance
    • Mathematics
    • English First Language
    • Life Skills
    • Computer Literacy

Option 3:

  • An NCV Level 4 qualification (from a TVET College) with passes in:
    • Engineering Process
    • Professional Engineering Practice
    • Applied Engineering Technology
    • Automotive Repair & Maintenance
    • Mathematics
    • English First Language
    • Life Skills
    • Computer Literacy
