Internship: Biorefinery Industry Development Facility
The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) is a leading South African institution that develops science and technology solutions to support economic growth. We are looking for a motivated graduate to join our Biorefinery Industry Development Facility within the Chemicals Cluster in Durban.
About the Internship
- Type: Internship
- Location: Durban, KwaZulu-Natal
- Field: Chemistry (Biorefinery / Industrial Applications)
- Duration: 6‑12 months (exact dates to be agreed)

Key Responsibilities
- Analyse and interpret experimental data
- Assist in planning and conducting experiments on bio‑refinery technologies
- Prepare technical reports and project documentation
- Develop and maintain standard operating procedures
- Manage laboratory inventory and keep the workspace well organized
- Prepare chemical reagents and run routine general chemistry experiments
- Learn about industrial biorefinery applications under the guidance of senior researchers and engineers
Qualifications & Skills
- BTech (Bachelor of Technology) in Chemistry or Analytical Chemistry
- Hands‑on experience with laboratory equipment and procedures
- Computer literate – competency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
- Strong analytical and problem‑solving abilities
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Self‑motivated, results‑driven, and a team player
- Proactive, organized, able to prioritise tasks and work under pressure
- Willingness to learn and adapt to new technologies
- All international qualifications must be evaluated by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA)
