About the Role

The Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs is offering a valuable internship opportunity within the Municipal Powers and Functions and Interventions Support unit. This role is designed for graduates seeking to gain practical experience in public administration and contribute to the support and strengthening of local government structures. The successful candidate will be part of a dynamic team from 2026 to 2028.

Minimum Requirements

  • A National Diploma or Bachelor’s Degree in Public Administration, Management, or an equivalent qualification.
  • The qualification must be at NQF level 6 or 7.
  • All qualifications must be recognized by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA).

Important Note: Applicants must not have previously served as an intern or been a contract worker in the Public Service (including Local Government) or the Private Sector. Failure to disclose this information will lead to immediate disqualification or dismissal.

Key Responsibilities

While a detailed job description will be provided, the intern’s duties will generally involve providing administrative and technical support to the unit. This may include assisting with research, data analysis, report writing, and supporting interventions related to municipal powers and functions.

Selection Process

Shortlisted candidates can expect to undergo the following steps:

  1. A technical exercise designed to test relevant elements of the job.
  2. A generic managerial competency assessment using the mandated DPSA SMS tools.
  3. Pre-employment screening, which includes criminal, credit, and citizenship checks, as well as verification of qualifications.

Terms of Appointment

The successful candidate will be appointed on a probationary period for 12 months and will be required to sign a performance agreement.
