A vacancy exists for a SHE Manager in the Construction division at our client’s office in Johannesburg. Reporting to the National SHEQ Manager, this role aims to strengthen the SHEQ leadership structure by providing dedicated SHEQ management for the Construction business unit. The successful candidate will oversee SHEQ implementation and compliance, enabling the National SHEQ Manager to focus on strategic oversight and continuous improvement.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and manage SHEQ activities for the Construction division nationally, ensuring alignment with company and client standards.
- Ensure compliance with OHSA and MHSA, including relevant regulations and standards.
- Oversee the preparation, implementation, and maintenance of Safety Files and Contractor Packs for allocated sites and projects.
- Support and coordinate Safety Officers within the Construction department.
- Conduct regular site inspections, audits, and compliance checks.
- Lead incident investigations, root cause analysis, and implementation of preventive actions.
- Represent the company during external audits and inspections.
- Compile and deliver monthly and ad-hoc SHEQ reports to the National SHEQ Manager.
- Promote a strong safety culture and ensure proactive risk management throughout the operational lifecycle.
- Lead SHEQ planning and resource allocation for tenders and project kick-off phases.
- Track and ensure closure of non-conformances, near misses, and audit findings, maintaining a live corrective action register.
- Engage with clients, contractors, and authorities on SHEQ compliance matters.
- Monitor contractor compliance, including safety file evaluation and competency checks prior to site mobilization.
- Contribute to SHEQ performance reporting for Exco or Board-level dashboards, including Key Risk Indicators (KRIs) and interventions.
- Foster cross-site learning and best practice sharing to build a proactive SHEQ culture.
Competency Profile
Experience
- Minimum 8 years’ experience as a Safety Manager or similar role in a multi-site construction environment.
- Proven experience in Construction under MHSA and OHSA legislative frameworks.
- Experience in the Mining, Petrochemical, Power Generation, and Water Treatment sectors is advantageous.
Qualifications
- BTech / Advanced Diploma in Safety Management (NQF level 7) – Essential.
- SACPCMP registration at CHSM level – Essential.
- COMSOC 1 & 2 – Essential.
Other Requirements
- Own transport and valid driver’s license, with willingness to travel extensively.
- Strong knowledge of relevant legislation (MHSA & OHSA).
- Excellent communication, leadership, and administrative skills.
- High attention to detail and ability to perform under pressure.
- Proven ability to manage HSEC and Passport 360 systems, as well as paper-based compliance documentation.
