About the Role

The University of KwaZulu‑Natal is seeking energetic and experienced cleaners to maintain a safe, clean and hygienic environment across all campus facilities. As a Cleaner X34 (Grade 16), you will be responsible for general cleaning duties in offices, kitchens, ablutions, laboratories, corridors, and event venues. Your work will support a hazard‑free environment for students, staff and visitors.

Key Responsibilities

  • General cleaning of interior and exterior areas, including offices, kitchens, laboratories, ablutions, corridors and event venues.
  • Refuse removal and proper waste and recycling disposal.
  • Operation of basic cleaning equipment (vacuum cleaners, floor scrubbers, carpet steamers, etc.).
  • Window cleaning and deep floor cleaning as required.
  • Light furniture moving and layout adjustments to support events and day‑to‑day operations.
  • Reporting any maintenance issues or hazards to the facilities management team.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Minimum Grade: 8 (experienced cleaners should have at least one year of relevant experience).
  • Knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
  • Familiarity with the operation of basic cleaning equipment.
  • Strong physical stamina and the ability to perform manual tasks.
  • Reliability, punctuality and a commitment to maintaining cleanliness and safety standards.
  • Short‑listed candidates may be required to undertake a skills test.
