Job Summary
The Department of Water and Sanitation is seeking a dedicated and reliable Groundsman to join our team at the Voelvlei Scheme. As a Groundsman, you will report to the Maintenance Supervisor and work closely with other team members to perform routine maintenance tasks. The Voelvlei Scheme is a key irrigation and water storage facility in the Western Cape, and your efforts will directly contribute to its smooth operation. Key Responsibilities
- Perform daily maintenance of grounds, including mowing lawns, trimming hedges, and weeding garden areas to keep the premises neat and presentable.
- Clean and maintain pathways, driveways, and parking areas by sweeping, raking leaves, and removing debris.
- Assist in the upkeep of water infrastructure sites, such as clearing drainage ditches and ensuring access roads are clear.
- Plant, water, and care for trees, shrubs, and flowers as needed to enhance the landscape around the scheme.
- Operate and maintain basic gardening tools and equipment, such as lawnmowers, trimmers, and watering systems, reporting any faults promptly.
- Support irrigation activities by checking sprinklers, hoses, and pipes for leaks or blockages.
- Remove rubbish and litter from all areas of the facility, including canals and reservoirs, to prevent environmental hazards.
- Assist with minor repairs to fences, gates, and signage around the property.
- Participate in seasonal tasks, such as preparing grounds for events or winterizing equipment.
- Ensure compliance with health and safety standards, including proper use of protective gear and safe handling of chemicals if required.
- Collaborate with other departments, such as maintenance and operations teams, to support larger projects.
- Maintain records of work completed, including daily logs of tasks performed and materials used.
These duties may vary based on the needs of the Voelvlei Scheme and departmental priorities. The role requires physical fitness, as it involves outdoor work in various weather conditions.
Requirements and Qualifications
- Matric (Grade 12) certificate or equivalent. A qualification in landscaping, horticulture, or a related field will be an advantage.
- At least 1-2 years of experience in grounds maintenance, gardening, or a similar outdoor role.
- Knowledge of basic landscaping techniques and tools.
- Physical ability to perform manual labor, including lifting up to 20kg and working in outdoor environments.
- A valid driver’s license (Code B or higher) would be beneficial for operating small vehicles or machinery.
- Understanding of water conservation practices and environmental awareness.
- Good communication skills and the ability to work well in a team.
- Reliability, punctuality, and a positive attitude towards manual work.
- No criminal record, and must be willing to undergo a background check.
