Overview

The City of Cape Town is inviting motivated and disciplined individuals to apply for the Metro Police and Traffic Learnership 2026. This structured training programme offers learners practical skills and qualifications in law enforcement, road safety and public service. Participants will undergo extensive theoretical and physical training to prepare them for future roles in municipal policing and traffic management.


Eligibility

Open to all qualified candidates who meet the following minimum requirements.


Minimum Requirements

  • Hold a Grade 12 (Matric) qualification (documentary proof required).
  • Be a permanent resident of the City of Cape Town (proof required).
  • Be proficient in English and at least one other official South African language.
  • Be between 18 and 35 years old.
  • Be medically and physically fit to complete strenuous physical training.
  • Have no criminal record or pending cases that could compromise integrity.
  • Hold a valid Code B driver’s licence (manual transmission).
  • Be unemployed at the start date of the learnership (7 January 2026).
  • Have no visible tattoos when wearing a City uniform.

Applicants should be fully aware of their health status before assessments, as excellent physical fitness and mental resilience are mandatory.


Compulsory Fitness Tests

All shortlisted candidates must complete and pass the following assessments. Failure to meet any requirement results in elimination:

  • 2.4 km run – Males: 12 minutes | Females: 14 minutes
  • Push‑ups – 30 in 60 seconds
  • Sit‑ups – 30 in 60 seconds
  • Dead‑load carry – 2 × 25 kg (100 m)
  • Tyre drag – 20 m distance
  • Shuttle runs – 10 × 20 m in 60 seconds
  • Wall clearing – 2.1 m
  • Motorcycle reach test
  • Comfort swim – any stroke, unassisted

Note: Pregnant applicants may not participate in the physical assessments.


Selection Process

Selected candidates will:

  • Pass a written assessment and interview.
  • Pass a City physical assessment.
  • Provide fingerprints and ID numbers for criminal record verification.
  • Undergo a medical evaluation, drug test and psychological assessment.
  • Complete a City driver assessment.

Candidates must also comply with the Code of Conduct of the Public Safety Training College and meet all academic and physical requirements.


Special Conditions

  • Successful applicants must complete the Further Education and Training Certificate: Road Traffic Law Enforcement and the Law Enforcement Skills Program SP4/2012.
  • The City is not obliged to offer permanent employment after the programme.
  • Learners will receive intensive physical training, firearms handling (in accordance with the Firearms and Ammunitions Act) and other operational training.
  • Candidates dismissed from local government due to misconduct will not be considered.
  • Continuous high fitness and psychological readiness are required throughout training.
  • Candidates with chronic illnesses or physical impairments that disrupt training may be excluded.
  • Concealment of health conditions leads to immediate withdrawal.
  • Unilateral withdrawal or failure to complete training for disciplinary reasons may result in a refund of the City’s expenditure.
  • Learners must wear the uniform, work shifts in all weather conditions, and may be rotated across any area within or outside Cape Town.
  • No private work, business or contractual activity with any municipality or organ of state is permitted without prior written consent.

Internal staff should use the SAP Portal; external candidates should use the online careers platform. No email or hand‑delivered applications will be accepted. To apply, create an e‑Services Account on the City’s website. If you lack computer access, use the Smart Cape computers available at City libraries (membership required).


Required Documents

Upload the following with your online application:

  • Certified copy of your South African Identity Document (no affidavits).
  • Certified copy of your Matric certificate (no statement of results).

Shortlisted candidates will be contacted via SMS or telephone with details for compulsory tests. Bring your own training gear, food, and refreshments to testing venues.


Important Notes

  • Only applicants who pass the drug test and have no criminal record will be considered.
  • No late applications will be accepted.
  • If you do not receive feedback within three months of the closing date, consider your application unsuccessful.
  • Attempting to influence the selection process will lead to disqualification.
  • Successful candidates must be available for shift work and may not engage in other employment without written permission.
  • The City reserves the right to conduct random drug and alcohol tests during the course of employment.
