Job Description

Starke Ayres is a leading African and global supplier of premium vegetable, flower and lawn seed varieties. We are looking for a General Worker for our Research department in Kempton Park.

Responsibilities

• Prepare, manage and maintain all stages of plant cultivation from seed sowing to harvesting.
• Count and package seeds.
• Soak, wash and dry seedling trays.
• Prepare seedling mix for tray filling.
• Fill trays with seedling mix and sow seeds according to the sowing list.
• Move seedling trays from germination room to seedling house after 72 hours and organise them.
• Prepare seedling mix for planting pots and fill pots.
• Move filled pots into greenhouses or field and arrange them.
• Connect drippers to pots.
• Move seedlings from seedling house to greenhouses and field.
• Make planting holes in the field and transplant seedlings.
• Identify flowers ready for emasculation on female plants and perform emasculation as per crossing book.
• Perform pollination according to crossing book.
• Harvest crossed fruits and self‑pollinated fruits as specified by the breeder.
• Extract seeds from harvested fruits, wash and clean seeds after 24‑hour fermentation and dry them.

Requirements

• National Senior Certificate (Grade 12) – essential.
• Experience in the agricultural industry is advantageous.
