About the Role

The internship is designed to give a student a real‑world experience in a pharmaceutical environment. You will learn how to manage patient medication needs, provide excellent customer service, and support pharmacy operations under the direct supervision of a registered pharmacist.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in the sale of Schedule 1 to Schedule 6 medicines.
  • Prepare non‑sterile or sterile medicines according to approved formulas and SOPs.
  • Re‑pack, catalogue and control stock of prescription medicines.
  • Order medicines and supplies to keep the pharmacy stocked.
  • Read and process prescriptions, prepare labels, and dispense medication correctly.
  • Explain correct medication use and health information to patients.
  • Enter prescriptions accurately into the pharmacy system and ensure pharmacist review.
  • Assist patients at the dispensary, self‑medication counter and front shop.
  • Maintain patient profiles, track medical aid claims and process paperwork.
  • Handle chronic, HIV/AIDS and oncology medication authorisations.
  • Support stock takes, manage inventory levels, and report shortages.
  • Follow cleaning, health and safety, and uniform policies.

Minimum Requirements

  • Grade 12 / Matric
  • Enrolment in a 4‑year BPharm programme
  • Computer proficient (MS Office)

Advantages if you have: Work experience while studying, familiarity with Unisolve and E‑Scripting, knowledge of Retail/FMCG operations.

  • Fluency in English and a second language (reading, writing, speaking)
  • Application of BPharm knowledge to practical scenarios
  • Strong communication, listening and customer service skills
  • Conflict management and teamwork
  • Attention to detail and numerical accuracy
  • Problem‑solving and time management under pressure
  • Computer skills (MS Office)

Advantages: Third language, drug and family planning knowledge, retail experience.

Special Conditions of Employment

  • Willingness to work retail hours, including evenings and weekends
  • Capable of standing for long periods
  • Valid driver’s licence and reliable transport
  • Registered with the Pharmacy Council of South Africa or holding a valid work permit
  • Clear credit and criminal records
