Job Purpose

The Quality Sorter is responsible for ensuring that all wastepaper entering the plant meets quality standards. Duties include inspecting bales, removing contaminants, performing laboratory and moisture tests, and keeping accurate records. The role also involves operating forklifts, loading conveyors, and supporting safe plant operations during all shift schedules.

Key Responsibilities

  • Inspection & Quality Control
    • Visually inspect wastepaper bales delivered.
    • Record supplier details, truck registration, and take photos.
    • Select and test sample bales from each truck.
    • Conduct laboratory tests and report results.
    • Carry out moisture tests.
  • Contaminant Management
    • Remove plastic, metals, wires, boxes, brown fibre, clothing, shoes, etc., from bales and conveyors.
    • Weigh removed contaminants and record supplier, grade, weight, and type.
    • Discard contaminants in the correct bins.
    • Stop loading and notify managers if contamination >8 %.
  • Forklift Operation & Material Handling
    • Operate forklifts safely to move wastepaper within the warehouse.
    • Transport bales to conveyors, storage, or designated areas.
    • Assist in offloading trucks and loading conveyors.
    • Complete forklift pre‑use checks and report any defects.
  • Truck & Conveyor Operations
    • Support weighbridge operations during night shifts and weekends.
    • Ensure smooth flow of wastepaper onto conveyors.
  • Operational Support
    • Participate in daily, monthly, quarterly, and audit counts of wastepaper and wet lap.
    • Assist teammates during shutdowns and general duties.
  • Housekeeping & Standards
    • Keep warehouse, conveyors, forklifts, and work areas clean and visitor‑presentable.
    • Follow 5S standards at all times.

Health, Safety & Environmental

  • Follow all safety protocols and wear required PPE.
  • Report near misses, incidents, and unsafe conditions immediately.
  • Dispose of contaminants per environmental regulations.
  • Participate in safety drills and toolbox talks.

Performance Measures

  • Safety compliance and incident reporting.
  • Accurate and timely contaminant recording.
  • Quality of laboratory and moisture test results.
  • Forklift safety compliance and checklist completion.
  • Effective truck offloading and conveyor loading.
  • Housekeeping and 5S adherence.

Skills & Competencies

Generic: problem‑solving, communication, basic computer use, attention to detail, adherence to procedures.

Functional: knowledge of pulp and paper quality standards, basic technical and process control, valid forklift licence, understanding of contaminants, ability to offload trucks and load conveyors.

Behavioural: teamwork, adaptability, initiative, accountability.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Grade 12 (N3) or equivalent.
  • Logistics or Supply Chain qualification is a plus.
  • At least 1 year in a large equipment manufacturing environment.
  • Forklift licence with 1 year of driving experience.

Physical Requirements

  • Lift up to 25 kg.
  • Stand, bend, and work in noisy or dusty environments for long periods.
  • Comfortable working indoors/outdoors with temperature changes.

Work Schedule & Hours

  • Rotating day and night shifts, including weekends and public holidays.
  • Overtime and standby may be required.
