Key Responsibilities

  • Customer Service
    • Monitor and improve internal customer satisfaction.
    • Provide medication counselling on use, side effects, interactions, and storage.
    • Offer health advice on medicines, diseases, primary care, screening, maternal and child health, family planning, and immunisation.
  • Dispensing & Medication Management
    • Dispense prescriptions (hospital and retail) under a registered pharmacist’s supervision.
    • Assist in handling oncology drugs, controlled substances (Schedules 1–6), and regional pharmacy protocols.
    • Prepare, compound, and re‑pack medicines as instructed.
    • Maintain accurate stock control for all controlled substances.
  • Cost Management
    • Monitor and reduce Cost Per Event in the hospital setting.
    • Encourage generic substitution and monitor managed healthcare variances.
    • Enhance use of generic products such as antibiotics and CVS drugs.
  • Public Health & Campaigns
    • Plan and lead campaigns like Breast Awareness Week, Heart Week, and Pharmacy Week.
    • Support prescription dispensing for hospital and retail, including chemotherapy and total parenteral nutrition (TPN).
  • Logistics & Stock Control
    • Oversee safety, efficacy, and quality of medication acquisition and storage.
    • Conduct cycle counts, full stock takes, and manage stock expiry.
    • Provide assistance for internal departments and inter‑clinic sales.
  • Research & Information
    • Perform monthly pharmaceutical audits in assigned wards.
    • Use drug information centres (Medicine Information Centre, Pharmnet Amayeza) and research databases (MEDLINE, EMBASE, PubMed).
    • Document and respond to queries promptly.
  • Quality Assurance & Risk Management
    • Adhere to South African Pharmacy Council regulations.
    • Maintain compliance and support continuous improvement.
  • Teamwork & Professional Development
    • Collaborate across teams to achieve shared goals.
    • Engage in ongoing learning to keep skills current.
  • Stakeholder Relationships
    • Build constructive relationships with patients, doctors, colleagues, and suppliers.
    • Create a positive, inclusive environment that values diversity.

Qualifications & Skills

  • Essential: Registration with the South African Pharmacy Council.
  • Preferred: B.Pharm degree, intermediate computer skills (Microsoft Office).
  • Knowledge: Familiarity with Netcare processes and pharmacy practice standards.
  • Physical: Capable of meeting job requirements; accommodations available for limitations.
