Canteen General Assistant – 12‑Month Fixed Contract

About the Role
GBS is seeking a motivated and reliable General Assistant to join our in‑house canteen team at the Centenary Café in Umhlanga. The position requires a friendly, diligent individual who can maintain cleanliness and support efficient service in a fast‑paced environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Handle routine tasks including the safe use of chemicals, hand‑held tools, machinery and equipment.
- Clean kitchen and dining areas; wash utensils, crockery, cutlery and vending machines.
- Report all repairs and maintenance issues to the appropriate department.
- Set up and clean venues for functions, arranging chairs and other furniture as required.
- Carry out specialised cleaning and ad‑hoc services whenever needed.
- Unload and distribute consumables and cleaning materials.
- Follow housekeeping procedures and remove waste systematically.
- Ensure consistent, high‑quality service delivery within the Centenary Café.
- Clean food‑preparation, equipment, and serving areas after each meal service.
- Adhere to Food Safety Management Practices and relevant standards.
- Maintain equipment, personal hygiene and food safety at all times.
- Apply safe working procedures across all tasks.
- Perform additional duties as prescribed by your line manager.
- Work overtime or on weekends when required.
Minimum Requirements
- Matric certificate (advantageous).
- 1–2 years of experience as a general assistant in an in‑house canteen, restaurant or similar setting.
- Culinary qualification is an advantage.
- Must be employed by GBS for at least six months.
- Within the last three months: 90 % attendance record, no active warnings, not on any performance programme.
- Inform your line manager of your application.
