Job Overview
The Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) is seeking dedicated and experienced individuals to fill three positions as Security Officer Supervisors at Nandoni Dam in Limpopo. In this role, you will lead a team to provide strong supervisory and day-to-day security services. Your main goal will be to protect the department’s assets, staff, and property while following all relevant government security rules and standards. This is a permanent position that offers a chance to contribute to national water infrastructure security in a key location.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
As a Security Officer Supervisor, you will play a vital role in maintaining a safe environment at the dam. Here are the main tasks you will handle:
- Lead and manage a team of security officers, making sure their daily work runs smoothly and efficiently.
- Oversee access control at all entry and exit points, including thorough checks and regular patrols around the site.
- Keep accurate records in visitor registers and prepare detailed reports on any incidents that occur.
- Check and maintain all security tools and systems, such as radios, CCTV cameras, and alarm systems, to ensure they are always working properly.
- Investigate and report any security issues, breaches, or unusual activities promptly and in detail.
- Apply and enforce the department’s security policies, procedures, and instructions without exception.
- Hold regular shift briefings, provide training sessions, and monitor the performance of your security team to build their skills and effectiveness.
- Work closely with local law enforcement, emergency services, and departmental leaders when needed to resolve issues.
- Carry out emergency response plans and evacuation drills during any incidents to ensure everyone’s safety.
- Make sure all activities comply with the Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority (PSIRA) guidelines and other national security regulations.
This role requires hands-on leadership and a proactive approach to keeping the site secure at all times.
Qualifications and Experience Required
To be considered for this position, you must meet the following minimum requirements:
- Education: A Senior Certificate (Grade 12) or an equivalent qualification from a recognized institution.
- Experience: At least two years of practical experience in security operations, preferably in a government department or a corporate setting.
- Other Essential Requirements:
- A valid Grade B Security Certificate issued by the Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority (PSIRA).
- A firearm competency certificate will be an added advantage, especially for handling potential risks at the site.
- A valid driver’s license is required, as the role may involve driving around the dam area or to nearby locations.
These qualifications ensure you have the foundational knowledge and certifications needed to perform effectively in a supervisory security role.
Skills and Competencies Needed
Success in this position depends on a mix of technical knowledge, personal skills, and professional attitudes. The department is looking for candidates who demonstrate:
- Solid understanding of security laws, policies, and standard procedures used in South Africa.
- Knowledge of how to handle emergencies, assess risks, and develop plans to manage them.
- Familiarity with Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) regulations to promote a safe working environment.
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, along with strong interpersonal abilities to interact with team members, visitors, and officials.
- Proven ability to supervise others, deliver training, and motivate a team to achieve high performance levels.
- Basic computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook for reporting and administrative tasks.
- High levels of integrity, professionalism, and attention to detail in all security matters.
- Flexibility to work shifts, including nights, weekends, and public holidays, as the role demands round-the-clock coverage.
