Purpose of the Position
The purpose of this role is to provide general maintenance and operational support at various Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) sites. This includes dams, canals, and other infrastructure facilities. The position focuses on ensuring cleanliness, proper upkeep, and safe working conditions in all operational areas. By doing so, it supports the department’s overall water infrastructure management and maintenance programs. General Workers will help keep sites running smoothly, contributing to the reliable delivery of water services across different regions.
Minimum Requirements
- Education: Basic literacy and numeracy skills, equivalent to an ABET Certificate or Grade 10.
- Experience: No prior experience is required. The department will provide on-the-job training to help you succeed in the role.
- Driver’s Licence: A valid driver’s licence is an added advantage but not essential.
Knowledge, Skills, and Competencies
- A basic understanding of cleaning, gardening, and general maintenance procedures.
- The ability to use hand tools and basic maintenance equipment safely and effectively.
- Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) practices to ensure a safe working environment.
- Good communication skills and the ability to work well in a team.
- Physical fitness to handle manual labour duties in various weather conditions.
- Punctuality, reliability, and strong attention to detail in all tasks.
- The ability to follow supervisory instructions clearly and work outdoors under different conditions, sometimes in remote or challenging locations.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform general cleaning duties in and around work areas, buildings, and water infrastructure such as dams and canals to maintain hygiene and order.
- Assist in minor repairs, maintenance, and construction activities as needed to support ongoing operations.
- Maintain grounds and gardens by mowing lawns, pruning plants, clearing debris, and keeping the surrounding areas tidy.
- Load, offload, and move materials and equipment as directed by supervisors to facilitate smooth workflow.
- Clean, maintain, and store tools and machinery safely after use to ensure they are ready for the next task and to prevent accidents.
- Assist with the upkeep of dam sites, canals, and pump stations, including basic checks and support for water flow systems.
- Support technical and operations teams during inspections, repairs, or emergency responses to infrastructure issues.
- Perform regular safety checks and report any hazards, damages, or potential risks in the infrastructure to supervisors promptly.
- Execute any other duties as assigned by supervisors to meet the department’s operational needs.
