About the Programme

Eskom, South Africa’s leading power utility, is excited to invite dedicated and motivated young South Africans to join the Learner Plant Operator Programme for 2025. This programme offers a unique chance to build a strong foundation in the energy sector through a combination of structured classroom training and practical, hands-on experience at Eskom’s power stations nationwide.

As a Learner Plant Operator, you will play a key role in supporting the safe and efficient operation of power generation facilities. The programme is designed to equip you with essential technical skills, knowledge of industry standards, and real-world experience to launch a rewarding career in power plant operations. Whether you are a recent graduate or someone looking to enter the technical field, this opportunity provides comprehensive training to help you grow professionally in one of South Africa’s most critical industries.

Participants will undergo institutionalised training modules covering plant operations, safety protocols, maintenance procedures, and environmental compliance. On-the-job learning will allow you to apply these skills directly in a live power station environment, working alongside experienced operators and engineers. This blended approach ensures you develop both theoretical understanding and practical expertise, preparing you for potential future roles within Eskom or the broader energy sector.


Available Locations

The programme is offered at three key Eskom power stations, each providing a dynamic setting for training and development:

  • ⚙️ Duvha Power Station – Located in Witbank, Mpumalanga. This modern coal-fired plant is one of Eskom’s largest and offers exposure to high-capacity generation operations.
  • ⚙️ Tutuka Power Station – Situated in Mpumalanga. Known for its commitment to efficiency, Tutuka provides hands-on experience in boiler and turbine systems.
  • ⚙️ Lethabo Power Station – Based in Deneysville, Free State. This station focuses on sustainable power production and offers training in large-scale plant management.

Depending on your application and Eskom’s needs, you may be placed at one of these locations to complete your training.


Programme Details

  • Position Title: Learner Plant Operator
  • Position/Task Grade: L5
  • Contract Type: Fixed Term / Apprenticeship. This is a structured programme lasting typically 12-24 months, combining learning and work experience.
  • Remuneration: Market Related. As a learner, you will receive a stipend or salary aligned with industry standards for entry-level training positions.
  • Employment Equity Position: No specific designation, but open to all qualified candidates.

The programme is ideal for those seeking entry into the technical operations side of power generation, with opportunities for further qualification and career progression upon successful completion.


Minimum Requirements

To be eligible, applicants must meet the following qualification criteria. Eskom values a strong foundation in maths, science, and communication:

  • Grade 12 (Matric) with at least 50% in Mathematics, 50% in Physical Science, and 40% in English; or
  • N3 Certificate with at least 50% in Mathematics, 50% in Engineering Science, and 40% in English; or
  • NCV Level 4 with at least 50% in Mathematics, 50% in Physical Science, and 40% in English; or
  • National N4, N5, or N6 Certificate including Trade-related subjects; or
  • National Diploma, B Tech, B Eng, or BSc Eng in a relevant engineering or technical field.

Additional Requirements:

  • You must be a South African citizen by birth or descent.
  • Applicants will undergo a thorough recruitment and placement process, which may include interviews, assessments, and medical evaluations, to determine the best fit across Eskom’s operations.
  • No prior work experience is required, but enthusiasm for technical work and a willingness to learn are essential.

Key Responsibilities

As a Learner Plant Operator, your daily duties will focus on learning and contributing to plant operations. Key responsibilities include:

  • Participating actively in structured training and development programmes, including classroom sessions, simulations, and workshops on plant systems, safety, and regulations.
  • Gaining practical operational experience through on-the-job learning, such as monitoring equipment, assisting with routine checks, and supporting maintenance activities under supervision.
  • Adhering strictly to Eskom’s safety and quality standards to prevent accidents and ensure efficient power production. This includes following lockout/tagout procedures, wearing personal protective equipment, and reporting hazards promptly.
  • Contributing to team efforts in shift operations, learning to handle control room tasks, boiler operations, and turbine monitoring over time.
  • Documenting learning progress, completing assessments, and providing feedback to improve the training process.

These responsibilities will evolve as you progress, allowing you to take on more complex tasks and build expertise in power plant operations.

Applications close on 6 November 2025. Submit in person at the Tutuka Power Station security gate with the required documents.
