About the Role
Dis-Chem Pharmacies’ Raslouw store is looking for a motivated individual to join our team as a Dispensary Support staff member. This is a fantastic opportunity for someone looking to build a career in the pharmaceutical sector. You will be employed on a Fixed Term contract with the primary goal of completing the learner basic pharmacist assistant course. This comprehensive course is designed to provide you with a deep understanding of the fundamental principles of the pharmaceutical environment and dispensing, ensuring quality on-the-job learning. Upon successful completion and registration with the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC) as a basic assistant, you will be offered permanent employment.
Minimum Requirements
- Grade 12 (Matric) or a Senior Certificate.
- A minimum of 50% in Pure Mathematics.
- A minimum of 50% in either Life Science or Physical Science.
- An overall average of at least 50%.
Key Responsibilities
Once registered as a learner basic assistant with the SAPC, your duties will be performed under the direct personal supervision of a qualified pharmacist and will include:
- Accurately selling Schedule 1 medicines and other scheduled substances.
- Assisting with the compounding, manipulation, and preparation of non-sterile medicines according to approved formulas and Standard Operating Procedures.
- Helping with the unpacking, merchandising of stock, and maintaining the cleanliness and organization of dispensary and Over-The-Counter (OTC) shelves.
- Accurately interpreting prescriptions and acting professionally and within all legal requirements set by the SAPC.
- Picking, packing, labelling, and checking medication with a high degree of accuracy, with an awareness of common dosages and important drug interactions.
- Ensuring all dispensed medications are double-checked and signed off by a pharmacist.
- Assisting with stock control, including managing shelf organization, checking expiry dates, and reporting low or out-of-stock levels.
- Following up with patients regarding script tracking reports and appointment reminders.
- Assisting with calls related to the call centre scripts and general patient service inquiries.
- Providing helpful health promotion information to customers.
- Assisting with medical scheme authorizations for chronic, HIV/AIDS, and oncology medications.
- Receiving and processing dispensary stock deliveries in line with company SOPs.
- Performing any other duties as assigned by the Dispensary Manager.
Required Competencies
- Essential:
- Proficiency in English and a second South African language (read, write, and speak).
- Strong time management skills and the ability to work well under pressure and meet deadlines.
- Meticulous attention to detail.
- Excellent communication and customer service skills.
- Strong problem-solving abilities and a proactive team player attitude.
- Ability to manage conflict and demonstrate accountability and professional conduct.
- Trustworthiness and honesty.
- Basic computer and numerical skills.
- Advantageous:
- Previous experience in retail FMCG or front shop work at Dis-Chem.
- Knowledge of drugs, family planning, and complementary medicines.
- Proficiency in a third language.
- Experience with Unisolv, SAP, or E-Scripting systems.
Special Conditions of Employment
- Successful completion of a proficiency test to assess your capability for registration with the Pharmacy Council (SAPC).
- Must be a South African citizen.
- Clear criminal and credit record verified through MIE checks.
