Job Overview

The Kennel Assistant at the Sasol K9 Unit is a vital role focused on ensuring the health, safety, and cleanliness of security dogs and their living environment. This position involves daily tasks such as cleaning, feeding, exercising the dogs, and supporting handlers with training activities. It is a physically demanding job that requires a dedicated, reliable individual with a genuine passion for working with animals.

Minimum Requirements

  • PSIRA Certification: Must have a valid PSIRA Grade C registration.
  • Dog Handling Certification: A minimum of DH2 (Dog Handler Level 2) is required. DH3 or a higher certification will be a distinct advantage.
  • Physical Fitness: Must be physically capable of performing strenuous tasks, including walking, lifting, restraining dogs, and manual cleaning.
  • Animal Handling Experience: Prior experience working with dogs, especially large or working breeds, is essential. Experience in a kennel, veterinary, or similar environment is preferred.
  • Criminal Record: A clean criminal record is mandatory, as background checks will be conducted.
  • Language Proficiency: Must be proficient in reading, writing, and speaking English.
  • Additional Attributes: Must be reliable, punctual, disciplined, calm, and confident around animals. The ability to follow instructions and work effectively as part of a team is crucial. Must be willing to work weekends, holidays, and be available on standby as needed.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform daily cleaning and sanitation of dog kennels and surrounding areas.
  • Feed and water the dogs daily according to established schedules.
  • Exercise dogs under proper supervision.
  • Promptly report any injuries, illnesses, or abnormal behavior in dogs to the Kennel Master.
  • Assist with dog training and socialization activities as required.
  • Safely handle dogs for grooming, dipping, veterinary visits, and medical checks.
  • Maintain the hygiene of food and water bowls, fly traps, and the general kennel environment.

Core Processes

  • Clean kennels twice daily (morning and afternoon) using disinfectants and high-pressure cleaning equipment.
  • Dedicate a minimum of 3 hours each morning to kennel cleaning tasks.
  • Inspect perimeter fences and training grounds daily for potential threats such as holes, poison, or foreign objects.
  • Administer medication to dogs as directed by veterinary instructions.
  • Ensure that offices, vehicles, and surrounding areas are kept clean and presentable.
  • Participate in specialized training exercises, including narcotic or explosive detection training, tracker dog scent trails, and patrol dog agitation exercises.
  • Strictly adhere to all Safety, Health, and Environment (SHE) policies and standards.

Working Conditions

  • Must be available to work rotating weekends, holidays, and respond to emergencies when called upon.
  • The work environment involves exposure to noise, animal waste, cleaning chemicals, and various outdoor weather conditions.
