Job Description
We are seeking a dedicated and hardworking General Worker to join our research team in Kempton Park. This role is integral to our seed research and development operations, involving a variety of tasks that support the growth and cultivation of plant varieties from seed to maturity.
Key Responsibilities
- Accurately count and package seeds according to specific guidelines.
- Soak, wash, and dry seedling trays to ensure they are prepared for use.
- Prepare seedling mix and fill trays for sowing.
- Sow seeds according to provided sowing lists and schedules.
- Move seedling trays from the germination room to the seedling house after 72 hours and arrange them in proper order.
- Prepare seedling mix for planting pots and fill the pots accordingly.
- Move and arrange filled pots in the greenhouses for optimal growth conditions.
- Connect drippers to pots to ensure proper irrigation.
- Transport seedlings from the seedling house to greenhouses and the field.
- Prepare planting holes in the field for transplanting.
- Perform transplanting of seedlings to their designated growing areas.
- Prepare ropes for trellising and connect them to cables and plants for support.
- Identify flowers on female plants that are at the correct stage for emasculation, following instructions from the breeder’s crossing book.
- Perform pollination tasks as detailed in the crossing book to support breeding programs.
Requirements
- National Senior Certificate (Grade 12) OR a minimum of 2 years of hands-on experience working with pollinations and emasculations in a similar environment.
- Previous experience in the agricultural or horticultural industry is highly advantageous.
- Must be physically fit and able to perform manual labor in various weather conditions.
- Attention to detail and the ability to follow precise instructions are essential.
- A strong work ethic, reliability, and a willingness to learn are key attributes for this role.
