About the Role

eThekwini Municipality is seeking a diligent and responsible Meter Reader to join our Revenue Department. The primary purpose of this role is to accurately acquire and record water meter readings. These readings form the essential basis for billing our customers for their water consumption. The successful candidate will also be responsible for identifying and reporting on meters that cannot be read, as well as any illegal water connections or supply issues.

Key Responsibilities

• Collect a pre-programmed handheld meter reading unit and assigned route from the Meter Reading Controller at the start of a shift.
• Follow designated routes to locate and sequence water meters for reading.
• Accurately obtain and record meter readings using the provided electronic device.
• Return recorded data to the Meter Reading Controller for auditing and capturing into the billing system.
• Investigate and report any irregularities observed, including:
  • Unusually high or low water consumption readings.
  • Crossed meters or meters that are not on the system.
  • Signs of illegal water connections.
  • Burst pipes, water leaks, and any other damage to infrastructure.
• Report all meters that could not be read and detail the reasons why.

Essential Requirements

• Grade 12 (NQF Level 4) or equivalent qualification.
• Mathematics or Accounting as a passed subject is required.
• A valid motor vehicle driver’s license.
• Minimum of 1 year of relevant experience.
• Basic computer literacy.

Preferred Requirements

• A Certificate in a Finance-related field.
• 2 or more years of relevant experience.

Remuneration and Benefits

The total annual remuneration package for this position is within the range of R391,642.44 – R508,372.92 per annum. This is a permanent position that includes the following benefits:
