About the Job
We are looking for a dedicated Ward Hostess to join our team in Johannesburg. In this role, you will play a key part in ensuring that patients receive excellent care and service in a hospital setting. Your main focus will be on providing meals, beverages, and support to patients while maintaining high standards of hygiene and presentation. This position requires someone who is organized, friendly, and able to work well under pressure in a fast-paced environment.
Duties and Responsibilities
Your day-to-day tasks will include a variety of responsibilities to ensure smooth operations in the ward kitchen and patient service areas. Here is a detailed overview:
- Make sure that patients always have access to ice water. Check and refill as needed throughout the shift.
- Keep urns full of hot water at all times and ensure they are turned on and ready for use.
- Serve patients tea, coffee, and alternative snacks according to their preferences and needs.
- Help patients fill out menu cards correctly, noting their meal choices for the day.
- Collect and return menu cards to the kitchen as soon as possible to allow for timely meal preparation.
- Update the diet list before each meal service to reflect any changes or special requirements.
- Immediately report any diet alterations or special requests to the appropriate staff for quick handling.
- Transport meal trolleys from the kitchen to the wards in an orderly manner, and return them promptly after serving.
- Double-check that all trays are complete with the correct items before placing them on the trolley or setting them in front of patients. Incomplete trays are not acceptable and must be corrected right away.
- Serve patient meals on trays, but remove the trays immediately after the patient has finished eating to keep the area clean.
- Wash all cutlery thoroughly after every meal. Maintain strict control and tracking of all cutlery used in the ward.
- Always serve cutlery in clean cutlery bags to ensure hygiene.
- You will be personally responsible for all cutlery in the ward. Lock it away securely when not in use to prevent loss or misuse.
- Keep the ward kitchen neat, tidy, and organized at all times. Do not leave trays or dirty items in the ward kitchen after meals—bring them back to the main kitchen immediately.
- Maintain a neat, clean, and tidy personal appearance at all times. Wear the full uniform and adhere to the company’s high standards of professionalism.
- For private patients, provide additional services including: delivering the morning newspaper of their choice, offering refreshments for direct family members visiting, serving Healthwise chocolate with evening tea or coffee, and allowing them to order from the a la carte menu if desired.
These duties are essential to creating a positive and comfortable experience for patients and their families while upholding the highest levels of service in the healthcare environment.
Skills and Competencies
To succeed in this role, you should possess the following skills and qualities. We value candidates who can demonstrate these abilities in their daily work:
- The ability to work effectively in a pressurized environment, staying calm and efficient during busy periods.
- Strong communication skills to interact well with patients, staff, and visitors at all levels.
- A solid understanding of hygiene and quality standards, particularly those set by Fedics, to ensure food safety and cleanliness.
- A well-presented, neat, and professional image that reflects the company’s values.
- The motivation to be a self-starter who takes initiative without needing constant supervision.
- The flexibility to operate independently with minimal oversight, managing tasks efficiently on your own.
- Willingness to work flexible hours, including weekends and public holidays, as this is a 7-day operation.
These competencies will help you thrive in the dynamic hospital setting and contribute to a supportive team environment.
Qualifications and Requirements
We are seeking candidates who meet the following qualifications to ensure they can handle the responsibilities of the role effectively:
- Matric certificate (Grade 12 or equivalent).
- Previous experience in a hospital or healthcare environment is advantageous but not essential. If you have worked in food service, hospitality, or customer care, this will be a plus.
No further formal qualifications are required, but a passion for patient care and attention to detail are key. Training will be provided to help you meet our specific standards.
This position offers an opportunity to make a real difference in patient well-being while working for a reputable company like Tsebo Solutions Group. If you are reliable, caring, and enjoy providing excellent service, we encourage you to apply.
