About the Job

We are looking for a motivated candidate to join our global HVDC and FACTS team as a FACTS Engineer Intern. The internship is part of DNV’s FlexGrid-HV program in South Africa and will involve working closely with technical professionals and the Energy Systems Group to deliver consulting services and support business development.

What You’ll Do

Project Management Support

  • Assist project managers in planning, organising, and coordinating FACTS project activities.
  • Help project engineers with system studies, design reviews, and preparing technical documentation.
  • Collaborate with cross‑functional teams to gather requirements and keep everyone informed.
  • Create project plans, timelines, and schedules, and monitor progress.
  • Research project risks, constraints and develop mitigation ideas.
  • Support the creation of status reports, meeting minutes, and other deliverables.
  • Coordinate project meetings and manage documentation.

Bid Management Support

  • Work with the bid team to prepare proposals for FACTS services such as STATCOM.
  • Research market trends, regulations and competitors.
  • Contribute to technical and financial bid documents.
  • Help maintain bid tracking systems and databases.
  • Participate in bid reviews and help analyse outcomes.
  • Stay updated on industry trends and regulations.

Technical Consulting Support

  • Assist in feasibility studies and assessments for FACTS projects.
  • Collect and analyse technical data (site characteristics, resource assessments, efficiency estimates).
  • Help evaluate and optimise FACTS technologies.
  • Support the preparation of technical reports, presentations and recommendations.
  • Collaborate with engineers, project managers and business developers.
  • Aid in developing financial models and cost‑benefit analyses.
  • Research emerging technologies and regulatory frameworks.
  • Participate in client meetings and workshops.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of technical consulting methods.

Who We’re Looking For

Qualifications

  • Master’s or Bachelor’s degree in Power Systems, Electrical Engineering or related field.
  • Strong interest in FACTS/STATCOM technologies.

Skills

  • Analytical and problem‑solving abilities.
  • Ability to interpret technical data and draw meaningful conclusions.
  • Proficiency with data analysis tools such as PSCAD, Digsilent, PSSE, Excel, MATLAB or Python is a plus.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Good organisational and time‑management skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Attention to detail and a commitment to high quality work.
  • Flexibility to adapt to changing project requirements.
  • Strong proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Positive attitude, eagerness to learn and strong work ethic.
  • Familiarity with power electronics, reactive power compensation and project development is a plus.
  • Knowledge of project management principles and tools is a plus.
